I decided I need to break out of a rut, so I leaped off a cliff and tackled the first of Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive, a 1200-page behemoth. He’s renowned as an author, and now I see why: his worldbuilding is superb, and his command of his craft is such that despite finding myself in a cast of thousands with no familiar geography or customs or names or such, it wasn’t too long before I was deep in the story and no longer grasping for “Wait, who is this and where is that place and how does he relate to XYZ?”
I once read a lot of fantasy and sci-fi, but aside from Diana Gabaldon’s infrequent publications, I hadn’t read a work of this length in quite some time. I found that my sense of story pacing was completely thrown off, but that’s on me, not him. He’s a deservedly famous and beloved author, and a big hats off to him as a master of the craft.
