This series is hardly new and certainly not new to me, but after the most recent book came out, I found myself wanting to go back to the beginning. It’s not the first time, but I’m enjoying even more experiencing all the characters again. I must admit that I like Eve and her world better in more recent books, but no question it’s a remarkable series and good from the get-go. I think liking it better now is inevitable as the characters and storyline—and Eve, most of all—have grown and deepened.
Eve Dallas is a troubled character, due to tragic past, but she’s remarkable for who she’s made herself. Some people would spend their lives dwelling on the past, but Eve does the opposite, burying it for years and years until she meets Roarke and begins to trust him enough to soften and open up. I don’t always want the violence and the misery and sometimes evil associated with the homicide cases she solves, but the world around her and the continuing characters—plus Eve herself, growing and changing—are catnip to me. She and Roarke—the erudite, gorgeous and richest man in the world (and a former street rat and thief)—butt heads often, but they also, in a very real sense, save each other, however unlikely a match they seem. In each other, they find the only person either has met who knows them, knows all the bad parts of them, and accepts them for who they are.
So I’m recommending the In Death series by J.D. Robb, a continuing police procedural series that’s so much more. It’s a love story for the ages, a fun ride and an experience like none I’ve ever relished.
Big 5 stars. Kudos to Nora Roberts, who’s never been better in her alter ego!
